so gentlemen - consider yourself forewarned - i'm about to talk about my period, but not all graphic and stuff ... so don't click below if you prefer not to be associated with stuff like that

i'm early
i'm NEVER early

i'm so NOT early that i scheduled myself for a gyno appt tomorrow, 6 weeks ago

"most" cycles go approx 28 days, i've always gone 32-35 days

but for some reason, i was early today, by four days (not supposed to start until sunday or so)

the reasonable part of me knows what i'm about to say is probably coincidence because things don't usually happen so quickly ... but i went and picked up some soy isoflavones and black cohosh. i've been feeling super moody for the last three months, and after changing my diet i figured i might as well take some supplements. i was going to alternate when i took them so that i'm not DOUSING my body in extra stuff ... i took a soy caplet last night with dinner, and then a black cohosh with lunch today. now supposedly these balance out and promote "optimal hormone levels" - according to the labels - but still

they COULDN'T have made me start my period so early ... could they? i mean ... it's been maybe 18 hours. nothing works THAT quick.

*shrug* Could be that your body has a more delicate balance than most...it's hard to tell you much more than that without knowing very specific information about the dosages of each thing (i.e., how much of the active components in each caplet?). Black cohosh is one of those things they suggest as a natural abortifascent, so it could very likely cause an early period if taken at the right time.

Yes, that herb can definitely work that quick. There are lots of herbs that women can use to help regulate their cycles, black and blue cohosh are two of them, I also use Vitex (chaste tree berry) and sometimes that can help bring on a very recalcitrant cycle as well.

A cycle of 32-35 days suggests that some "sub-optimalness" is present in your hormonal system. "Normalizing" your hormonal system will likely shorten your cycle.

I can't say what might happened with you without a LOT more information, but I can tell you that some herbs *CAN* work very quickly, and Black cohosh is a strong emmenagogue. It is also a very relaxing nervine, and acts very quickly to relax muscle tissues such as the uterus (which might alone produce menstruation if muscular tension was cinching the tissue and retarding flow).

Keep in mind that the hormonal system is a very complex and intricately entwined set of mechanisms. Altering it should be done with a lot of knowledge and a gentle approach in almost all cases. There are several herbs that effect the hormonal system in various ways, and even a single herb can have seemingly opposite effects in different people/situations. This is why you can't rely on the vague, general, overly-simplistic claims manufacturers put on their products to encourage sales (and some writers put in less reliable texts).
